Drawing in watercolor: “Fairy resting”
Taking advantage of the Christmas season , full of magic and fantasy , I have decided to make a watercolor related to some endearing characters that I am passionate about: fairies . In the work I wanted to convey feelings of tranquility and illusion – through the fairy resting on the moon, which acts as an armchair – adding fresh touches – and healthy! – such as the fruit basket, and Christmas motifs.
Applying color
After drawing the sketch in pencil , I let the pencil rest a bit to match the brush and start painting. The selection of colors is very personal, but I am going to explain how I worked on this example work.

For the skin color I have used a 50% mixture of ocher yellow and cadmium red ; in first place I have applied a layer quite transparent to the mixture to then go adding additional layers . In the shady areas I have used a little brown and later a little purple to give a more lively touch.
Referring to the dress , the main color is white, so what I did was simply applying color in areas of shadow and folds of the same, using the purple . The white color of the paper itself will be the one we use as the main color of the dress.
The fresh touch comes from the hand of the fruit basket , made in a kind of wicker, for which I have used a first yellow base with loose brushstrokes to generate the braided look of the basket. Subsequently, its color is applied to each fruit, playing again with the white of the paper to generate highlights of light.
For the moon , an element of rest, I have used a base of ocher yellow and brown for the area of the contours and edges.
Finally for the background – like a galaxy – I have used two different shades of blue ( dark and soft ) and purple .

Materials employed
To make this drawing I made use of a pencil common or pencil for drawing the sketch of a brush for watercolor paper 300g weight and watercolors brand ECOLINE . I recommend using this brand since although it is a little more expensive, its pigment is more intense and of better quality, so we can get more out of it.
