Portraits and personalized drawings with BIC pen
Pen drawings are a very interesting and creative way to express yourself through art. By using just one pen to draw – I use the legendary BIC brand pen – you can create a variety of different effects and textures on the paper. Some of the techniques used to draw with a pen are:
- Shading: By varying the pressure of the pen on the paper, darker or lighter shades can be created. This can be done by moving the pen in circles or in parallel lines to create different shading effects.
- Lines: By drawing fine, precise lines, you can create precise details and contours in your drawing. Texture effects and patterns can also be created using different line styles.
- Scraping: By scratching the surface of the paper with the pen, lighter areas of color and textured effects can be created. This can be done by moving the pen back and forth across the paper, or by rotating it while scratching.
- Color Mixing: By layering different shades of pen, new colors and mixing effects can be created. This can be done by applying different shades of pen on top of each other or by mixing different shades in small areas of the drawing.
It’s important to note that when drawing with pen , once you’ve applied color to the paper, you can’t go back. Therefore, it is important to carefully plan your drawing before you begin and consider how you want to achieve the different effects and tones. Despite its difficulty – in terms of correcting errors – one of the jobs I enjoy the most is when I make personalized drawings and portraits with a ballpoint pen. I love paying attention to small details and reflecting them in realistic drawings ; This type of detailed work supposes for me a kind of meditation , since it allows me to focus on small aspects and enter a state of maximum concentration. In addition, this type of work leaves little room for mistakes, since it is not like oil or watercolor, where if you make a mistake you can paint another layer that covers it. Therefore, pen drawings require extra concentration and effort.
How do I make portraits with pen? I divide the process into several phases to try to minimize errors.
- In a first stage I make a sketch of the final design with very fine lines where it represents the outline of the final image. The idea is to have a base on which to work later.
- Then I start layering the ink over the body of the sketch, adjusting the intensity of the drawing to get a sense of depth, shadows, wrinkles, etc.
- Finally, I work on the aspects of the drawing that require less load, outline details and finish the finish.

What material do I use? I always work with the same type of paper – except for special orders – and pen.
- Paper. I use 224gr paper, in A4 size, from the ” Canson ” brand.
- Pen . I work with the BIC brand , with the two famous models: crystal (fine line) and normal. a classic!
