One of the questions artists often encounter is: Should the concept come first, or should the artwork come first?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should we begin with a clear idea, a message, or a story and then create an artwork to express it? Or should we simply start creating and allow the meaning to develop through the process?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don’t think there is one answer for every artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, it depends on where you are in your artistic journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a> When You Are Still Finding Your Voice<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you are a beginner\u2014or even when you have been creating for years but are still searching for your own artistic identity\u2014I don’t believe you need to begin with a profound concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You need to begin with making art<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Draw. Paint. Experiment. Copy. Study other artists. Try different materials. Make mistakes. Make things you don’t like. Make things you unexpectedly love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because when you are developing as an artist, you are not only learning technical skills. You are also discovering yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your artistic identity is not something that necessarily appears through thinking. It emerges through making.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might spend hours asking yourself, What is my style? What makes my work unique? What do I want to say?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But sometimes the answer cannot be found by thinking about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have to create your way toward it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a> Your Artwork Leaves Clues<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every artwork you make contains hundreds of decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You choose certain colors, shapes, compositions, textures, subjects, lines, materials, and ways of handling light and shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, these decisions may seem completely unrelated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But after creating many artworks, you may begin to notice something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You keep returning to certain colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You repeatedly draw particular subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are attracted to specific shapes or compositions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You use certain textures again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps you are always fascinated by flowers, faces, architecture, animals, symbolic objects, or particular combinations of colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These repetitions are not necessarily signs that you lack originality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can be clues to your artistic identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the things we naturally repeat are the things that genuinely belong to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a> Repetition Can Become Style<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Artists often worry about repeating themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We may think that if we paint the same subject again, use the same colors, or return to the same visual elements, people will think our work is predictable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I believe repetition can be one of the foundations of artistic style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about an artist who repeatedly paints flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, they may simply paint flowers because they enjoy them. Over time, they experiment with them. The flowers change shape, become symbolic, become surreal, or begin appearing in unexpected compositions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, those flowers may become an unmistakable part of that artist’s visual language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist didn’t necessarily decide at the beginning, “Flowers are going to be my signature.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They discovered it through repetition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same can happen with color, composition, subject matter, technique, or even the way an artist handles a particular detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Style often develops from the things we repeatedly choose.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a> Quantity Is Important\u2014But Not for the Reason You Think<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is why I believe quantity matters, particularly in the early stages of an artist’s development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because making more artwork automatically makes you a better artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But because every artwork gives you another opportunity to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One painting might teach you what you enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another might show you what doesn’t work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A mistake might lead to an unexpected technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An experiment with color might reveal a combination that feels completely natural to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You cannot discover all of these things by planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some discoveries happen only when your hands are working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more decisions you make, the more opportunities you have to recognize which decisions feel genuinely yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And eventually, those decisions begin to form a visual language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a> Then the Relationship With Concept Changes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But something changes when an artist has developed a stronger visual identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you have a visual language that feels like your own, you can begin with something else:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A personal experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A social issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something you want to understand or communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now you have a language through which you can express it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where concept becomes much more powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine ten artists working with exactly the same idea: memory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One might create an abstract painting using layers of texture and muted colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another might create fragmented portraits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another might use childhood objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone else might use embroidery, photography, sculpture, or surreal imagery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concept is the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artworks are completely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the concept is only the starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist is what transforms it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a> The Concept Isn’t What Makes the Artwork Unique<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Two artists can have the same idea and produce completely different artworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They bring their own experiences, cultural backgrounds, influences, emotions, techniques, and ways of seeing into the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why I believe that artistic identity is so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without a personal visual language, an artwork can sometimes become an illustration of an idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist has something to say, but the visual language hasn’t yet become strong enough to make that message uniquely theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when an artist has developed a recognizable way of seeing, the concept passes through that language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same idea can become something completely personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that is where individuality appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A concept does not automatically make an artwork memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes it memorable is the way a particular artist gives that concept a visual form that could not have come from anyone else.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a> Don’t Be Afraid to Repeat Yourself<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you are currently trying to find your artistic style, I think it can be useful to look back at your old work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put several of your paintings or drawings next to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t judge them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just observe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What keeps appearing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which colors do you repeatedly choose?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which subjects attract you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are there shapes, symbols, textures, or techniques that you keep returning to?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may discover that your artistic identity has been developing quietly for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes we are so focused on trying to invent<\/em> a style that we fail to notice the one already emerging naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you don’t have to reinvent yourself with every artwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are allowed to return to the same subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are allowed to explore the same colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are allowed to develop the same visual ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, sometimes the deeper you go into something familiar, the more original it becomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of constantly asking, “What can I do that I’ve never done before?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What can I discover by going deeper?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a> So, Which Comes First?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So, which comes first\u2014the concept or the artwork?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think the answer depends on the artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are still searching for your artistic identity, make the artwork<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experiment. Study. Practice. Repeat. Make mistakes. Follow your curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t put pressure on yourself to make every artwork intellectually profound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you need to create simply to discover what you naturally gravitate toward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But once you have developed a visual language that feels authentically yours, concepts can become powerful starting points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can begin with an idea and then ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can I express this through my own visual language?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that point, the concept and the artwork are no longer competing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They become partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a> First, Discover the Language<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the real question isn’t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Should the concept come first or the artwork?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the better question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Have I already discovered my own artistic language?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the answer is no, keep creating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your style may not need to be invented. It may need to be uncovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the way to uncover it is through making\u2014through hundreds of small decisions, experiments, failures, discoveries, and repetitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, when your visual language becomes stronger, you can use it to say something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can take your memories, questions, emotions, experiences, and ideas and transform them through a language that belongs to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, discover the language.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, decide what you want to say with it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because people may remember a concept for a moment, but they remember an artist for the way only that artist could bring the concept to life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
