Shall we start?

Set goals: the micro challenges

Without a goal you will feel lost, so always have a goal or challenge to achieve. Give each week a challenge to learn something such as learning to draw heads from different perspectives, draw x different heads in 7 days, practice drawing with a pen, etc. Having a goal or challenge will make you work harder and after you have set yourself those little challenges, and after a while, you will realize how much your work has improved with the use of a specific material or figure drawing. It is highly recommended that while you do these micro challenges you take notes of what you have learned along the way or what you needwork even harder to continue perfecting and mastering it.

Pen challenge

Create your «creativity notebooks»

All artists always have the idea chip activated , and we are thinking about drawings and projects that we would like to carry out, but we do not always have time to carry them out. If we capture these ideas , they will be forgotten! The trick here is very simple, and even more so today that we have smartphones everywhere: write down the ideas immediately on your mobile phone and then write them down in a special notebook – I call it ” Creativity Notebook “. In that short note that you make feel free to describe the whole idea, theme, atmosphere, colors, background and everything you have in mind … then you will easily remember it . You can also use this notebook to writeInspirational words of different themes to use later in your drawings; for example, words like fly, whale, hope, fog, etc. So every time I need to draw something or edit a drawing, and I get the: I don’t know what to do! I immediately go to my magic notebook and check my lists of ideas.

Use references!

Many people think that artists only draw with their imagination, but the truth is that we all have to work a lot studying anatomy and using models, since it is necessary to see the things that they are drawing in reality in order to draw well. With this in mind, I suggest that you use a reference of what you are going to draw ; Thus, if you are going to draw a cat then have an image of a cat at hand, and if what you are going to draw are heads, have images of many heads and try to copy them to learn and practice how to draw them well. Later, when you master the drawing of heads or faces, you can use your imagination to draw what you already have stored in your memory. Drawing is like poetryyou can’t write a poem unless you know the alphabet, the words, and how to write grammatically correct sentences; once you have all this knowledge, you can put it together to write poetry. Art is the same, so you need to learn the alphabet of art and how to use it , how to handle perspective and correct proportions, etc. When you master these skills, you can use your imagination to invent and create something new. Therefore, always use references, photographs, images … the imagination will come later.

Draw every day (or almost every day)

Everything comes with regular practice so if you only draw every month or every fortnight, don’t expect any improvement. Drawing every day seems difficult, so you can use the ” 10 minute method “: set your phone to go off an alarm every day for only ten minutes, grab a pencil and paper and say to yourself “it’s just ten minutes, I have to take advantage of them »and that’s it, enjoy your time! Draw whenever you can, it is never too much; Remember that nothing happens from one day to the next, it takes a lot of daily practice to improve artistic skills.

Examples of my daily sketches

Finish your works

Most of those who started drawing and did not finish what they started, then became frustrated because they did not achieve the goal. If you finish your drawing you will feel happy about the result and you will also feel excited about starting the next project.

Conclusions

As you have seen, I am not inventing gunpowder or discovering anything new, but I assure you that these tips are very valuable for an artist’s day-to-day life (at least for me!). Consistency is the key to success , but many times we need some “tips”
